WASHINGTON, May 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Fifty years ago this week the first pilot prototype Camaro was built.  To commemorate this golden anniversary the Historic Vehicle Association (HVA) uncovered these little known gems.

9. Born in Cincinnati
The first pilot prototype Camaro (No. 100001) was assembled on May 21, 1966 at the General Motors Assembly Plant, located in Norwood, Ohio, a few miles from Cincinnati. Why Cincinnati?  GM produced a large share of the subsequent production Camaros at the Norwood plant and used the construction of 49 pilot prototypes to develop the assembly line and equipment needed for high volume, serial production.  The Norwood plant was not going to be the only assembly line for Camaros, however, so the company also built three pilot prototypes at their Van Nuys, Los Angeles plant. (WASHINGTON, Nov. 5, 2015) - AAA’s President and CEO, Marshall Doney, has issued the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives passing a multi-year transportation bill today:

“Today’s passage of a multi-year transportation bill by the House is an important step toward improving our nation’s roads and bridges. This legislation is far from perfect, but it provides long overdue certainty for state and local governments, accelerates the deployment of 21st-century transportation technologies and ultimately will help decrease congestion and increase safety for motorists.

“The bipartisan collaboration that allowed this legislation to be considered in a timely manner is significant and signals a willingness to work with the Senate to send a bill to the President. While the debate is not over, today’s action by the House moves us a step closer to providing the motoring public with a safe, reliable and efficient transportation system. AAA will work to make this bill a bigger win for motorists as the legislation moves to conference.”

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today announced that beginning with model year 2018, the agency will update its 5-Star Rating System to include automatic emergency braking (AEB) as a recommended safety technology, providing consumers with new information on technology with the potential to prevent rear-end crashes or reduce the impact speed of those crashes by automatically applying the brakes.

“We are adding automatic emergency braking features to the 5-Star Rating System because crash-avoidance technologies can save lives and should be widely accessible,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “AEB can substantially enhance safety, especially with the number of distracted drivers on the road.”

Buying a new car might sound cool and exciting, but keeping your current vehicle, and continually maintaining it at recommended intervals, makes more economic sense than purchasing a new one, says the non-profit Car Care Council.

“From the down payment to the monthly car payments and higher insurance rates, the cost of buying a new car adds up really fast,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “By simply budgeting the equivalent of just one new car payment, you could cover an entire year’s worth of basic maintenance on your current vehicle and redirect the rest to beef up savings, take a vacation, or pay off credit card debt, college loans and other bills.”

ORLANDO, Fla. (November 11, 2015) –Automakers’ decision to eliminate the spare tire may leave more than 30 million drivers vulnerable at the roadside, according to new research from AAA. Tire inflator kits, a high-cost alternative for consumers, have replaced the spare tire in millions of vehicles over the last 10 model years and, due to their limited functionality, cannot provide even a temporary fix for many common tire-related problems. AAA calls on automakers to put consumer interests first and halt the elimination of the spare tire.

“Flat tires are not a disappearing problem, but spare tires are,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair. “AAA responds to more than four million calls for flat tire assistance annually and, despite advances in vehicle technology, we have not seen a decline in tire-related calls over the last five years.”
